VAH-ren-dol — the one world that holds both games. A surface and a deep, a warmth and a cold, eroded from the word fallen. Two regions, one catastrophe.

The founding cataclysm

The Fall.

A cold, devouring dark — the Gloom — came over the world, and in one cataclysm the light fell and a city fell. That is the critfall: the event the whole universe is named for.

Above, the Gloom snuffed civilization and left only embers of a light that had once been everywhere — the Founts ofEmberlight, a frontier fighting to rekindle the fallen light hearth by hearth. Below, a great city fell physicallyinto the earth and never climbed out; cut off from the sun, it answered the same cold with a colder light — the ledger ofGrimecrawl, where debt is the only warmth.

The long age after the Fall — when the fires had gone out and could not be relit — is the Unkindling. It has receded, not ended: the Gloom still holds the dark places, and still surges. To hold light in Vharendol is not to have won, but to be currently winning.

Two regions, one Fall

The same dark, two answers to it.

Both regions of Vharendol share one truth — that light is hard-won — but they sit in very different places, with very different senses of humor about it. They are contemporaries: two survivals of one Fall, living the same Unkindling in opposite ways.

Emberlight

Hopeful dark fantasy · "cozy-grim"

A surface world the Gloom almost swallowed. Warm Ember light against cold dark.

Founts pool with Ember; claim one and a Holdfast blooms around it, warm and defensible. Beyond the firelight the Gloom waits, patient and cold. Caravans run the dangerous wilds between Holdfasts, carrying light to places that have forgotten it. Earnest, hopeful, and just grim enough to matter.

Dark-comedy heist

A city that fell down a hole and decided to call it ambition. Debt is law.

An underground debt-city beneath a forgotten mountain, lit by fungus-lamps and the cold glow of accounting. The Ledger of Debts and the goblin-run First Bank of Grime own everyone in red ink. Pick a side — The Firm, the Sump Syndicate, or the Unwritten — and try to leave solvent. Gallows humor, customer-service horror, mostly bloodless.

The known world

One lit continent in a world of dark.

Emberlight is a single reclaimed continent; the rest of Vharendol’s surface is dark the Gloom still holds — the fog of war is the cosmology. This map is an early draft; names and coastlines will move.
